The Seven Sisters

The star cluster Messier 45 in the constellation Taurus is popularly referred to as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. The blue color of the reflection nebulosity is due to the blue light of the brightest stars being scattered by the surrounding dust. The pink tones in the right hand portion of image are due to weak emission of a gaseous component. Total combined exposure is eight hours with a modified Canon 40D DSLR at ISO 800 and a Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 astrograph (96 x 5 min lights; 64 flats; 30 darks; Paramount; Images Plus and Adobe PhotoShop CS5).
