Heart Nebula1156 viewsThe Heart Nebula, IC 1805, Sh2-190, lies some 7500 light years away from Earth and is located in the Perseus arm of the Galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia. This is an emission nebula showing glowing gas and darker dust lanes. The open cluster of stars near the center known as Melotte 15 illuminates the nebula. This is a single 7min exposure thru an FSQ106/Ha filter from Tzec Maun Observatory in Mayhill NM.

Supernova in Messier 1011205 viewsA supernova has appeared in the galaxy designed Messier 101. A supernova is essentially a star at the end of its lifetime that has exploded. This particular type of supernova is a type Ia, which is assumed to be due to the destruction of a white dwarf in a binary star system. The supernova can be seen in the image as the brightest "star" within the galaxy; located to the left of the center of the galaxy.

Messier 8, 20, and 211027 viewsThe Messier objects M8 (large nebula on right), M20 (blue and red nebula upper left) and M21 (open cluster below and to the left of M20) are favorite summer objects in the constellation Sagittarius. The Messier objects are found in a dense star field of our own Milky Way galaxy. Image taken with a modified Canon 40D and Takahashi E-180ed astrograph on a Paramount (50 x 5 min lights; 30 darks, 64 flats).

Sculptor Galaxy1169 viewsThe Great Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253), aka the Silver Coin, in the constellation Sculptor was discovered in 1783 by Caroline Herschel. The galaxy is at a distance of 9.8 million light years away from us. Research on NGC 253 indicates that it is a starburst galaxy, which means that it has recently hosted massive and rapid burts of star formation. The image is a total of 1 hr 50 min (22 X 300 seconds) exposure with a Takahashi E-180 astrograph and Canon 20Da DSLR camera.

M33 -Triangulum Galaxy900 viewsThe Triangulum Galaxy (Messier 33 or NGC 598) is a spiral galaxy approximately 3 million light-years away. It is the third largest galaxy in the Local Group, a group of galaxies that also contains the Milky Way. M33 is about 60,000 light years across and contains 10-40 billion solar masses. Celestron 6" SCT, unguided on GC-5. Stock Canon Rebel XSi, 21 minutes (needs more time-but forgot to charge battery). Taken at Dog Canyon State Park on the 11/22/08 public star party.

The Great Nebula in Orion1675 viewsMessier 42 in the constellation Orion is a star forming region in our galaxy, the Milky Way. It is a difficult object to photograph because of it's large variation in brightness. The attached is an image of M42 that is a combination of multiple stacked 10 second, 30 second, 60 second, 150 second, and 300 second exposures using Photoshop's High Dynamic Range tool ( Canon 20Da DSLR and an Astro-Physics 130mm f/8 refractor).

Markarian's Chain983 viewsMarkarian's Chain is found in the constellations Coma Berenices and Virgo. The two brightest members are Messier 84 and 86 in the upper right hand portion of the photo. The two galaxies close in proximity below them are known as the "Eyes." The one that is very irregular in shape is NGG 4438 (also cataloged as Arp 120 in Arp's Catalog of Peculiar Galaxies) that as been suggested to be the result of the in-progress merger of two galaxies. 2.6 h (32 x 300 sec) total exposure; Takahashi E-180; Canon 20Da

M65 and M661202 viewsM65 and M66 are two galaxies in the constellation Leo. Photographed using a Takahashi FSQ 106ED and a Canon 20Da DSLR. Exposure time was 27 minutes (9 X180 sec); calibrated, aligned, stacked, and DDP stretched in Images Plus followed by Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Lynds Dark Nebula 6732156 viewsLynds Dark Nebula 673 is found in the constellation Aquila. Unlike bright emission or reflection nebula, dark nebulae are essentially a dense cloud of gas and dust particles that block the light of stars behind it from our view. In this case, the light of stars in our Milky Way galaxy is blocked from view. Stars that do shine through often appear red due to the scattering of light by the dust particles. Total exposure of the image is 3.5 hrs (42 x 5 min).

The Pinwheel Galaxy1180 viewsMessier 33, aka the Pinwheel Galaxy or Triangulum galaxy, is found in the constellation Triangulum. At magnitude 5.7 it can be seen with the naked eye under dark skies. Its low surface brightness, however, often makes it a challenge even with large amateur telescopes in suburban locations. Image taken with a Takahashi E-180 astrograph and Canon 20Da camera; total exposure 1 hr 40 minutes (20 x 300 sec lights, 30 x 300 sec darks, 64 flats); processed with Images Plus 3.82b and Photoshop CS5.
