More Calcium-K941 viewsThis image from Jan 17,2012 shows active regions 1401/1402 in Calcium K (393.4 nanometers) as they rotated into view. This region recently threw off a coronal mass ejection (CME) that impacted Earth's magnetic field on Jan 22, 2012 creating auroras at the northern latitudes. M46792 viewsMessier 46 (M46, NGC 2437) This open cluster is very rich, with 150 stars of mag 10-13 and probably a total population of over 500. The brightest of these stars are of spectral type A0, and each about 100 times more luminous than the Sun (the brightest is of apparent magnitude 8.7). This indicates an age of about 300 million years. As a special and famous feature which is also obvious in my photograph, a planetary nebula (NGC 2438, also FC 87) appears within the apparent borders of M46. This object appears to lie near the northern fringes of the cluster. However, this nebula is not a true member but is superimposed, or perhaps a passing "guest". The distance of the cluster is 4,600 light years and only about 2,900 light years for the nebula

This is a shell of ionized gas expelled into the surrounding interstellar medium by a red giant star, which was passing through the last stage in its evolution before becoming a white dwarf. The distance is 2300 light years.

The Sadr Region in Cygnus1003 viewsThe Sadr Region is a region around Gamma Cygni in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan. This area hangs high overhead in the northern hemisphere during the summer. Contained within this region is defuse nebula IC 1318, an emission nebula with several dark nebulas intermixed. Image was taken with a 100mm f7.2 refractor and Hap Griffin modified Canon 1000D with an Astrodon filter from Alamogordo, NM on 9/26/2014. Stack of 15 ea 4 min exposures processed using Nebulosity 2.5 and PS V7.01 using Carboni tools.
The North American and Pelican Nebulae859 viewsThe North America Nebula (NGC 7000) and Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) in the constellation Cygnus comprise a vast region of ionized hydrogen. Light obscured by interstellar dust leads to the observed shape of each nebula. The North America Nebula was discovered by William Herschel in 1786. This wide-field image was taken with a Takahashi FSQ106ED with reducer at f/3.6 and a Canon 60Da DSLR at ISO 800 on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount; 5 hrs 45 min total exposure taken on 13 Aug and 15, 17 Sept 2015 (23 x 15 min lights; 12 darks; 128 flats; 128 bias); Sky X and Maxim DL software; processed with PixInsight using a synthetic light for deconvolution.
NGC1973703 viewsNGC 1973 (Running Man Nebula) is a reflection nebula associated with Orion’s molecular cloud. The nebula is located just .5 degree north of the Great Orion Nebula and 1,500 light years away from Earth. The blue color derives from the interstellar dust reflecting the light from the surrounding young stars. The image consists of 75 x 5min exposures taken with a Canon 60Da and TPO 8” RC telescope mounted on a Celestron CGE Pro mount. Images were stacked with Nebulosity 4 and processed with PixInsight 1.8
The Northern Trifid in Pegasus863 viewsThe Northern Trifid (aka NGC 1579) is found in the constellation Pegasus. Unlike its southern neighbor Messier 20 from which it got its name, the reddish hues are not a HII region but rather dust lighted by the reflection of a star with an unusual amount of H-alpha emission as well as interstellar extinction (S. J. O'Meara, The Secret Deep, 2011, pp 79-81). Our current understanding suggests the Northern Trifid is a vast dusty star-forming region. Image was taken with a SBIG 8300c CCD camera and a RCOS 12.5 inch f9 astrograph on a Paramount ME. Total combined exposure of 8 hr 20 min on the nights of 23 Nov, 30 Nov, 5 Dec 2016 in Mayhill, NM (25 x 1200 sec lights @-15 degrees C; 18 darks, 128 bias; 128 flats); Processed in PixInsight (64 bit).
