The Seven Sisters1141 viewsThe star cluster Messier 45 in the constellation Taurus is popularly referred to as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. The blue color of the reflection nebulosity is due to the blue light of the brightest stars being scattered by the surrounding dust. The pink tones in the right hand portion of image are due to weak emission of a gaseous component. Total combined exposure is eight hours with a modified Canon 40D DSLR at ISO 800 and a Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 astrograph (96 x 5 min lights; 64 flats; 30 darks; Paramount; Images Plus and Adobe PhotoShop CS5).

Helix Nebula1139 viewsThe Helix Nebula (NGC 7293), aka Helical Nebula or Sunflower Nebula, is a planetary nebula found in the constellation Aquarius. Despite it's designation as a "planetary" nebula, it has no relation to a planet. The term planetary nebula came from the "appearance as a planetary disk" in early telescopes. Planetary nebula are indeed the expelled gaseous remains of aging stars. The image is a total exposure of 1 hr 40 min (20 X 300 sec) taken with a Takahashi E-180 and Canon 20Da DSLR camera.

IC 1275 region1139 viewsIC (Index Catalog) 1275 is an emission nebula located within a rich star field in the constellation Sagittarius. The red color is due to ionized hydrogen gas (HII regions) being excited by nearby stars. Image taken through a Borg 71FL and modified Canon XS DSLR (two hour exposure, stacked with Nebulosity and processed in Photoshop).

The Flaming Star Nebula1137 viewsThe Flaming Star Nebula, IC 405, is located in the Constellation Auriga. The nebula is illuminated by the variable star AE Aurigae that is slowly passing thru the nebula but in fact did not condense from the surrounding nebula. The image acquired with a Canon 20Da DSLR (ISO 800) and a Takahashi E 180 astrograph. Total exposure time of 2.5 hrs (30 X 300 seconds lights calibrated, aligned, stacked, and stretched (DDP) in Images Plus 3.80 and further processed in Adobe Photoshop CS4).

Trifid Nebula (M20) in Living Color!1135 viewsHere is another summertime favorite, the Trifid Nebula (Messier 20) done with a Takahashi Epsilon 180 (f2.8) with SBIG 2000 single shot color camera using the Tzec Maun scopes in Australia. This is a single 10-minute exposure.

Gibbous Moon1133 viewsA picture of our nearest neighbor, the Moon, taken on Oct 7, 2011 with an Astro-Physics 178 mm f/9 refractor with focal reducer @ f/7.1, 1262 mm focal length; Modified Canon 50D; AP 1200 mount; 26 x 1/125 sec lights (best of 31 images graded in Images Plus 4.25); 31 darks, 66 flats).

Heart Nebula1133 viewsThe Heart Nebula, IC 1805, Sh2-190, lies some 7500 light years away from Earth and is located in the Perseus arm of the Galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia. This is an emission nebula showing glowing gas and darker dust lanes. The open cluster of stars near the center known as Melotte 15 illuminates the nebula. This is a single 7min exposure thru an FSQ106/Ha filter from Tzec Maun Observatory in Mayhill NM.

Antares, M4 and the Rho Oph cloud1120 viewsAntares is the bright star at the lower left of the image. It is over 700 times the diameter of our Sun. Globular cluster Messier 4 is seen on the lower right. The Rho Ophiuchus cloud complex is the closest star forming region to our solar system (~430 lght years away). The cloud complex is much larger than can fit in this image. Blue reflection nebula IC 4605 seen about mid-left, and IC4603 seen middle-top are created by interstellar dust. M15 Globular Cluster in Pegasus1118 viewsMessier 15, a gobular cluster in Pegasus, which was originally discovered by Maraldi in 1746 and rediscovered by Messier in 1764, lies 30,600 light years away. Fourteen 120-second exposures aligned, calibrated, and combined in Images Plus; processed with Adobe Photoshop CS2; taken with a 178mm f/9 Astro-Physics refractor and a Canon 20Da DSLR camera (ISO 800).
