The Pinwheel Galaxy703 viewsMessier 33, aka the Pinwheel Galaxy or Triangulum galaxy, is found in the constellation Triangulum. At magnitude 5.7 it can be seen with the naked eye under dark skies. Its low surface brightness, however, often makes it a challenge even with large amateur telescopes in suburban locations. Image taken with a Takahashi E-180 astrograph and Canon 20Da camera; total exposure 1 hr 40 minutes (20 x 300 sec lights, 30 x 300 sec darks, 64 flats); processed with Images Plus 3.82b and Photoshop CS5.

The Crescent Nebula and surrounding nebulosity662 viewsThe Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888) is in the constellation Cygnus. The brighter portion of the surrounding nebulosity in the upper left is IC 1318, which is part of the gamma Cygnus nebulae complex. The bright star in the center of the Crescent Nebula is a Wolf-Rayet star, which are extremely luminous and hot stars that loose mass at very high rates, designated as HD 192163. The image is a total exposure of 1 hr 45 min (21 X 300 sec) taken with a Takahashi E-180 f/2.8 astrograph and Canon 20Da DSLR camera.

The Messier 78 region325 viewsMessier 78 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. Associated with M 78 are various other reflection nebulae as well as large clouds of dust. The image was taken with a modified Canon 40D and Takahashi E 180 f/2.8 astrograph on a Paramount. Total exposure time was 11 hours 10 min (134 x 5 min lights, 35 darks, 64 flats); Image acquisition with MaxIm DL and calibration, registration, integration, and processing with PixInsight 1.8.1.1092.

The Owl Nebula476 viewsThe Owl Nebula (Messier 97, or M97) is a planetary nebula in the Big Dipper about 2600 light years away. The nebula formed about 6,000 years ago when a Sun-like star died. The nebula gets its name from the owl-like "eyes". This narrowband image consists Hydrogen alpha, Hydrogen beta and Oxygen emission lines captured through a 120mm f/8.3 refractor and Atik 314L+ camera (109 min total exposure).

Super Sunspot AR1746661 viewsSunpots are cooler regions in the photosphere where the magnetic field pops through and cools the surrounding plasma. The latest large sunspot rotated into view on May 5 and is the largest since 2003. Active Region (AR) 1476 spans about 160,000 km (100,000 miles) in this image. Mare Nectaris/Theophilus crater606 viewsThe Sea of Nectar (Mare Nectaris) is a small lunar mare located on the eastern edge of the Moon. Theophilus is the prominent lunar impact crater that lies slightly off center of the image to the left. Theophilus is over 60 miles in diameter and is 14,000 feet deep. The small crater in Nectaris near the top of the image is Rosse and is only 7 miles across. Image taken with a 6" SCT at f20 using a DMK 41AU02 camera through a Lumicom 656 nm filter.

Supernova in M95592 viewsA Type II supernova recently exploded in M95, a galaxy approximately 33 million light years away. Type II supernova are generated when large massive stars "die" and blow up. Heavier elements such as iron, gold, silver and uranium are created in about a second then scattered into the cosmos. The supernova is still about magnitude 13 so its still pretty dim (given its large distance). Imaged using a 6" SCT at f6.3 using an Atik 16IC camera (32 min exposure).

The Flaming Star Nebula677 viewsThe Flaming Star Nebula, IC 405, is located in the Constellation Auriga. The nebula is illuminated by the variable star AE Aurigae that is slowly passing thru the nebula but in fact did not condense from the surrounding nebula. The image acquired with a Canon 20Da DSLR (ISO 800) and a Takahashi E 180 astrograph. Total exposure time of 2.5 hrs (30 X 300 seconds lights calibrated, aligned, stacked, and stretched (DDP) in Images Plus 3.80 and further processed in Adobe Photoshop CS4).

Milky Way Over Alamogordo1120 viewsThis is a widefield image of the Milky Way taken on 4/29/11 from within the city limits of Alamogordo using a Canon T2i Rebel DSLR on a CGE mount. Visible near the center of the image is Messier 8 (M8, or the Lagoon Nebula), M20 (Trifid Nebula), rich star region M24, open clusters M21, M23 and M25. The Zeta Orionis Region808 viewsImage of the Zeta Orionis Region in the constellation Orion, which contains both the horsehead and flame nebula. This is a visible light image taken with a modified Canon 40D and a Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 astrograph (3hr 15 min total exposure). It is interesting to compare it to Jim's Narrowband Image (6th previous image) of the area which essentially maps the concentration of Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Sulfur.

Friday Night at the Orion612 viewsHere's another shot of the Orion nebula using the 6" SCT at f6.3 with an unmodded Canon Rebel XSi (15min total) done on 3/5/10. The nebula is seen as the middle "star" in the sword of Orion. The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. It is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years. This is an example of a stellar nursery where over 700 new stars are being formed. Cool stuff!
