Friday Night at the Orion797 viewsHere's another shot of the Orion nebula using the 6" SCT at f6.3 with an unmodded Canon Rebel XSi (15min total) done on 3/5/10. The nebula is seen as the middle "star" in the sword of Orion. The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. It is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years. This is an example of a stellar nursery where over 700 new stars are being formed. Cool stuff!

NGC 896429 viewsNGC 896 a star forming region in the constellation of Cassiopeia is located adjacent the Heart Nebula (see Steve’s image “The IC 1805 Region”). The image consist of 63 x 5min lights taken with a Canon 60Da and a TPO RC astrograph on a Celestron CGM mount.

Thor's Helmet in the winter Milky Way765 viewsNGC 2359 or Gum 4, a.k.a. Thor’s Helmet, is found in the winter Milky Way of the constellation Canis Major (the large dog). This constellation is easily located since Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, is found in Canis Major. Thor’s Helmut is a gaseous nebula illuminated by a very hot Wolf-Rayet star. Image is a total of 2.75 hr exposure (33 x 5 min lights, 30 darks, 64 flats, 64 dark flats) taken with a modified Canon 40D DSLR and Takahashi E-180ed astrograph.

Messier 8905 viewsMessier 8 is an emission nebula and open cluster in the constellation Sagittarius. Our current understanding is that the clouds of gas and dust of M8 constitute a star forming region in our galaxy. The image is a total of 15 minutes exposure (3 X 300 sec) with a Takahashi E-180 f/2.8 astrograph and a Canon 20Da DSLR camera. Images calibrated, aligned, and stacked in Images Plus 3.82B and processed in Images Plus and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

The Trifid Nebula Messier 20662 viewsMessier 20, aka the Trifid Nebula, is both an emission nebula (H-II region imaged in red) and reflection nebula (blue coloration), which is found in the constellation Sagittarius. M 20 is a young star forming region. Image was taken with a TeleVue 140 f/5 refractor and a SBIG ST2000xcm camera (@ -15 degrees) on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount. Image is a total of 4 hr 20 min exposure (26 x 10 min lights, 64 flats, 64 bias, 15 darks) that was calibrated, aligned, integrated (PixInsight nomenclature for combined), and processed in PixInsight 1.8 with final levels/curves in Photoshop CS6. Optec Alnitak panel used for flats.

IC 1805850 viewsIC 1805 in Cassiopeia. The loose open cluster in the center of IC 1805 is Melotte 15. A 3-minute exposure taken with a Takahashi Epsilon 180 f2.8 with a Canon 20Da DSLR.

Horse Head Reworked815 viewsThis was taken at Steve's on Nov 2, 2007 this is 7x10 minute images. with TakFS102 and SBig ST2000XCM. I reworked the image to pull out more of the sutle areas.

Narrowband Horsehead region1287 viewsThis is a narrowband image of the Horsehead nebula (B33) region in Orion taken with the Tzec Maun telescope in Mayhill. The "Horsehead" is actually a cold, thick, dark gas that is blocking the light from the bright (emission) nebula behind it. Hydrogen is indicated with red, sulfur is in green (yellow is a combination of hydrogen and sulfur) and Blue is Oxygen. The dats was collected back in January 2011 (3.5 hours worth) and processed by Steve. Thanks Steve !

Saturn529 viewsSaturn taken with a Takahashi Mewlon 300 Dakin 2.4x barlow and an Imaging Source DBK21AU618 OSC camera from Mayhill NM (2600 stacked images using Registax 5.1). Saturn lies about 900 million miles from Earth. It's disk measured 17.9 arc sec at its equator (with rings 40.6")

Messier 82, a starburst galaxy756 viewsMessier 82, a galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major, was discovered by Johann Elert Bode in 1780. Today we know M82 is a starburst galaxy where a large number of new stars are being born. Large amounts of in-falling gas are excited by the newly formed stars and are responsible for the red Ha emissions Total exposure was 11.4 hours (137 x 5 min lights) taken with a 130 mm f/8 Astro-Physics refractor and SBIG ST 2000xcm CCD camera on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount. Processed in Images Plus 4.5 and Adobe Photoshop CS5

M1521 viewsMessier 1, (M1, NGC 1952), The Crab Nebula is the most famous and conspicuous known supernova remnant, the expanding cloud of gas created in the explosion of a star as supernova which was observed in the year 1054 AD. It shines as a nebula of magnitude 8.4 near the southern "horn" of Taurus, the Bull. The distance is 6,300 light years.
